The variety belongs to the late-ripening category, although buds break early. Morphologically, it is characterized by medium-sized clusters, elliptical berries, and wedge-shaped, often five-lobed leaves. Young foliage has a yellowish hue with bronze spots.
The plant prefers sunny, warm sites with low-fertility clay-limestone soils and demonstrates good drought tolerance. Agronomic practices involve short pruning and the use of trellises. The variety shows high susceptibility to grey mold and flavescence dorée, and is moderately sensitive to powdery mildew.
Wines from Nielluccio are distinguished by high tannin levels and pronounced aromas of red and black berries, spices, licorice, violet, and earthy notes. In some appellations, the variety is an essential base for blends.
