The variety is of unknown origin and is also known by the name Calabrese. Studies show an absence of close genetic ties to other Sicilian varieties.
The plant prefers a dry and hot climate and is undemanding regarding soil fertility. The clusters are medium-sized and consist of small, round, dark blue or black berries. The yield of the variety is typically low.
Wines from this variety are characterized by medium acidity and a variety of flavor notes: from fruity notes of plum and red berries in young wines to spicy and chocolate tones in aged ones.
