The variety is an ancient autochthon of Sicily, also known by the name Calabrese. It belongs to the late ripening category. The leaf is pentagonal, five-lobed, slightly to moderately incised. The bunch is medium-sized, cylindro-conical, of medium density. Berries are medium, round, dark blue in color with a waxy bloom, the pulp is juicy with a harmonious taste and colored juice.
The plant possesses high resistance to arid conditions and heat, while being characterized by susceptibility to frosts and fungal diseases. The yield of the variety is usually low and depends on growing conditions. Traditionally, the alberello bush training system is used.
The variety is intended for winemaking, used both for monovarietal wines and as part of blends. The wines are distinguished by deep color, pronounced structure, and an aromatic profile including notes of cherry, plum, blackberry, chocolate, spices, licorice, and tobacco.
