The variety is a complex interspecific hybrid. It belongs to the category of late-maturing wine grape varieties. It is characterized by high yield, although its distribution has historically declined due to specific organoleptic qualities of the wine, which are sometimes described as aggressive.

The plant possesses resistance to both types of powdery mildew, but shows low resistance to phylloxera and a susceptibility to chlorosis. Wines produced from this variety are noted for their high alcohol content and characteristic blackcurrant notes. Synonyms for the variety are Couderc Noir, C 7120, Contassot 20 and Plant Verni.
