Variety description

The variety is autochthonous to the central part of Italy, and its genetic origin is linked to the natural crossing of Piedirosso and Casavecchia varieties. The harvest ripens by the end of September; the variety is characterized as low-yielding and sensitive to late spring frosts.

Morphologically, the variety is represented by medium to large clusters weighing about 300 g and berries with thick waxy skin of a purple-black color. Young shoots have pubescence, and leaves at the apex are distinguished by a bronze-green hue. In cultivation, the Guyot training system is used.

The wine grape variety is intended for the production of wine possessing aromas of plum, cherry, cocoa, coffee, and tobacco. The taste is characterized by structure with pronounced tannins. It is most often used in blends to increase the level of alcohol and phenolic compounds.
