The variety has a multi-purpose use, suitable for both fresh consumption and winemaking. The name of the variety is associated with the shape of the berries, which resembles an egg. Morphological characteristics include dense, medium-sized bunches and berries with thin skin.
The variety is traditional for a number of regions in Greece, including the island of Ithaca. Genetic studies indicate a high degree of relationship between Avgoulato and the varieties Korithi lefko, Kolokythas, and Baresana, which suggests their common origin as a result of mutations from a single parent variety.
