The variety belongs to the early to mid-season maturity group. The name indicates harvesting in August, which is earlier than many other Greek varieties. The plant is characterized by drought tolerance, although it has a susceptibility to downy mildew. The vines are often trained in the traditional bush vine form, and in some regions, the vines are grown on their own roots.

Wines from this grape are distinguished by a deep purple-red color. Taste characteristics include a medium to full body, velvety tannins, moderately high acidity, and aging potential. The aroma is dominated by notes of cherry, raspberry, blackberry, Mediterranean herbs, spices, and chocolate. The variety is a product of folk selection and is genetically related to the Mavrodaphne variety.
