The variety is a technical one and is characterized by vigorous growth and high yield. It is adapted to the cool and humid climate of the Minho region and is considered mid-season.
The grape is a natural variety that arose from natural crossing. The history of its cultivation in Portugal can be traced back to the end of the 18th century.
The variety is known by the synonyms Azal, Carvalha, Es Pinheira, Gadelhudo. The letter B in the name indicates the white color of the berries, which distinguishes it from the Azal Tinto variety.
