Bical is an autochthonous variety from the central regions of Portugal. Genetically, it is a natural hybrid of Malvasia Fina and an unknown variety. The variety has numerous local synonyms, such as Borrado das Moscas, Arinto de Alcobaça, and Pintado das Moscas, derived from the characteristic spots on the ripe berries.
The vines have hermaphroditic flowers; the leaves are five-lobed and round. The clusters are medium or small, compact, with small, round, golden berries. The variety is characterized by medium yield, good resistance to Botrytis cinerea, and high susceptibility to powdery mildew.
Wines from this variety are characterized by freshness, structure, and aromas of peach, apricot, and flowers. Due to its early ripening and rapid sugar accumulation, it is critically important to monitor the harvest timing to maintain the balance of acidity and prevent excessive alcohol content in the final product.
