The variety was obtained by crossing Kadarka and Muscat Bouschet. Clusters are medium-sized, ranging from moderately dense to dense, with a large lateral branch. Small, round, dark blue berries are covered with a bloom, have thick skin and juicy flesh.
The variety belongs to the late-maturing group; harvest occurs in early October. It is characterized by sensitivity to winter frosts and a medium level of susceptibility to grey mold. The berries possess intense coloring pigment, allowing for the creation of wines with a deep dark-red hue and high acidity.
Bíbor kadarka is used in winemaking primarily as a component for blends to improve the color of red wines. The variety is included in the official list for the production of Egri Bikavér wine.
