Boal represents a group of at least 16 Portuguese sub-varieties traditionally grown on the island of Madeira, as well as in the Douro and Dão regions. The plant belongs to the mid-late maturity group and possesses medium to high vine vigor.
Morphologically, the variety is characterized by large five-lobed yellow-green leaves with slight pubescence on the underside and perfect flowers. Clusters are medium-sized, cylindroconical, and loose; berries are medium-sized, oval, and golden-green in color. Like most representatives of Vitis vinifera, the variety is susceptible to fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and grey mold.
Boal is one of the four noble grape varieties for the production of Madeira. Wines based on it are distinguished by a balance of sweetness and high acidity, and upon aging, they acquire aromas of dried fruits, caramel, coffee, nuts, and citrus.
