Bobal is an indigenous variety of the Utiel-Requena region. The vines have high vigor, with long and strong shoots. Leaves are large, five-lobed, with dense bristly-arachnoid pubescence on the underside. The flower is hermaphroditic. Clusters are medium or large, conical in shape, and dense. Berries are dark blue or black, round or flattened, with thick and tough skin.
The variety is of late maturity; harvest takes place at the end of September or early October. Bobal is characterized by high resistance to drought, gray mold, downy mildew, and powdery mildew, and is relatively resistant to phylloxera. The variety is intended exclusively for winemaking: it is used for the production of single-varietal red and rosé wines, as well as in blends. There is a rare white clone, "Bobal Blanco".
