The variety belongs to traditional Portuguese varieties that formed as a result of natural folk selection. Currently, it is mainly found in old vineyards, particularly in the Douro region, and is used in winemaking.
Scientific literature notes difficulties in identifying this variety, as other genetic profiles may be hidden under the name "Carrega Tinto" or similar variants. Exact agronomic characteristics, such as maturity group or resistance indicators, are not described in detail in reference books.
