The variety has low vigor and low fertility. The clusters are large and loose, which protects the berries from mold. The berries themselves are small, elliptical, and have a thick skin with a moderate waxy bloom. Genetically, the variety is a cross between Guarnaccia (False) and Malvasia Bianca di Candia.
The plant shows good resistance to grey mold (Botrytis cinerea), but is susceptible to powdery mildew (Oidium) and is prone to flower abortion. The variety prefers dry, well-ventilated sites and low-fertility soils.
Wines from this variety are characterized by soft tannins and aromas of dark berries, dried herbs, leather, spices, licorice, and wild mushrooms. The variety is used both for producing varietal wines and as a component in blends.
