The variety is of Portuguese origin and has historically been cultivated in the Vinho Verde region. In some classifications, Cascal is mentioned as a synonym for the Terrantez variety; however, in official EU and OIV registers, these varieties are often treated separately.
The plant belongs to low-yielding varieties. It is susceptible to major fungal diseases, including powdery mildew and downy mildew. The grapes are used for creating delicate, fruity white wines.
