The variety is autochthonous to the Asturias region. According to the results of genetic studies, it is presumably a natural hybrid of the Savagnin Blanc variety and an unknown variety, and it also has a close relationship with the Alfrocheiro variety. There are mentions that the grapes were brought to the region by the Benedictines in the 11th century.
The variety is late-maturing. Due to the firm and thick skin of the berries, it has good natural resistance to diseases and rot. Wines produced from this variety are characterized as light or medium-bodied, with moderately low tannin content, medium acidity, and a moderate alcohol level, with notes of red fruits, spices, and mineral undertones.
The grape is considered rare and is cultivated in limited areas, mainly in the Cangas wine-growing zone. The variety is used exclusively in winemaking for the production of red and rosé wines. The variety should be distinguished from the Carrasco Negro and Carignan varieties.
