The variety is considered autochthonous to Spain, with the surroundings of the city of Cariñena being its presumed place of origin. It is a late-maturing grape variety characterized by very high productivity. The vines have rigid rachises and are distinguished by late budburst, which reduces the risk of damage from spring frosts.

The plant is sensitive to fungal diseases, such as downy mildew and powdery mildew. The variety is adapted to hot and dry climates and prefers well-drained, often poor and stony soils. The dark blue, thick-skinned berries contain high levels of sugar, possess high acidity, and have intense pigmentation.
