The variety is a selection of folk origin, presumably originating from the Aragon region in Spain. The plant is characterized by large, five-lobed leaves and dense, conical clusters. The medium-sized berries are oblong in shape and blue-black in color with thick skin. Rare color mutations with white and pink skin exist.
Carignan requires a warm climate and a long growing season, but due to late bud burst, it is resistant to spring frosts. The variety is susceptible to fungal diseases such as downy mildew, powdery mildew, and grey mold (Botrytis cinerea). With high yields, the grapes produce simple wines; therefore, quality wine production requires yield limitation and the use of old vines.
