The variety is of Spanish origin and is historically widespread in Mediterranean regions. The plant prefers a warm, arid climate, sandy, stony, or calcareous soils, and well-ventilated sites. Buds break relatively late, which reduces the risk of damage from spring frosts.
Morphologically, the variety is characterized by five-lobed leaves and large, compact bunches. The berries are medium to large in size, round, and have thick, blue-black skin. The vines are noted for their high productivity, which requires management to maintain grape quality.
The variety is intended exclusively for winemaking. Its wines are characterized by notes of black fruits, spices, licorice, and smoked products. Due to its high tannin and acidity content, the variety most often serves as a component of blends, providing the finished beverages with structure and aging potential.
