The variety is a mutation of the dark Carignan and has a morphological similarity to the original species, differing only in berry coloration. The clusters are of medium size, often have wings, and possess a rather dense structure.
The variety ripens very late, which limits its distribution and popularity among grape growers. It is sensitive to fungal diseases such as downy mildew and botrytis, and it is currently extremely rare in the regions of southern France and Spain.
Wines from this variety possess a fruity profile, increased acidity, and pronounced minerality, sometimes with shades of bitterness. The variety is used primarily as a minor component in regional blends.
