The vine is vigorous, with late budburst. Leaves are large, five-lobed. Clusters are medium-sized, conical, often winged and compact. Berries are medium or large, oblong, blue-black in color with thick skin.
The variety has high productivity, but is susceptible to Oidium, mildew, and Botrytis cinerea, which requires careful maintenance in humid climate conditions. The best results are achieved in warm arid regions when yield is restricted.
Wine grape variety for the production of red wines with high tannin content and acidity. Often used in blends to provide structure and rich color; the highest quality results are shown by old vines on poor soils.
