The variety is autochthonous to Portugal and is classified as a red grape. In official registries, it is listed as a separate entry under the index T, which stands for tinto (red).
Detailed morphological characteristics of the variety as an independent object are absent. Due to frequent identification with the Baga variety, it is attributed with the properties of late ripening, susceptibility to grey mold (Botrytis cinerea), and resistance to powdery mildew (Oidium). It is used for the production of tannic red wines with high acidity.
