Gaglioppo is an ancient variety historically associated with the Calabria region. According to genetic research, it originated from a cross between the Sangiovese and Mantonico bianco varieties. The vines of the variety possess high vigor and productivity; short pruning is recommended for cultivation.

The variety has a medium-late ripening period and is well-adapted to arid conditions, however, it is sensitive to powdery mildew and downy mildew. The leaf is medium-sized, five-lobed. Bunches are compact, conical or pyramidal in shape; the berries are black-blue in color, medium-sized, and have an ovoid or spheroidal shape.

The grapes are intended exclusively for winemaking. The resulting wines are characterized by high structure, alcohol content, and the presence of tannins, with aromas of red fruits, spices, tobacco, and leather. During the production process, temperature control is required to prevent oxidation of the must.
