The Riesling variety is the result of natural crossing, likely of the Heunisch and Vitis vinifera subsp. sylvestris varieties with the participation of Traminer. It is a wine grape variety whose cultivation history spans more than 600 years.
The plant is well adapted to cool climatic zones. Wines produced from it are characterized by high acidity and the potential for long aging, and the variety itself is used for both dry wines and late-harvest dessert wines and icewines.
