The variety is a natural hybrid genetically linked to the Rouge du Pays (Cornalin) variety. The first mentions of it date back to 1827; it is believed to originate from the Aosta Valley. The variety belongs to the category of old varieties and was on the verge of extinction in the 20th century.
It is a vigorous variety with a medium to late ripening period, maturing 20 days after the Chasselas variety. The berries are black. The wines are characterized by intense color, floral aroma with notes of cranberry, currant, and raspberry, as well as high acidity.
It is grown in very limited quantities, mainly in the commune of Bovernier. It should not be confused with the historical collective term "Goron," which denoted local red blended wines in Switzerland.
