The variety is autochthonous to Greece and originates from the islands of the eastern Aegean Sea. It is classified as a wine grape variety with a late ripening period. It is characterized by high growth vigor and productivity.
The plant possesses good tolerance to drought and high temperatures, however, it is prone to fungal diseases, including downy mildew and gray mold. The berries have thick skins and are rich in anthocyanins and tannins. It is used for the production of red wines, often in blends to impart color and structure.
Genetic research has confirmed that this variety is not a color mutation of the Savatiano variety. It has a high genetic affinity with local Greek varieties Mavro Spetson and Pappoudes.
