The variety is indigenous to Croatia and has many synonyms, such as Bratkovina Crna, Crljenica, Halahuša, Lelekuša, and others. Genetically, the grape originated from a natural cross between the variety Bljuzgavac and an unknown paternal variety. The flowers are functionally female, which requires the presence of pollinator varieties.

The purpose of the variety is primarily technical for wine production; however, historically it was also used as a table grape. The variety ripens late, is prone to flower drop, and is susceptible to downy mildew and powdery mildew, while demonstrating drought tolerance. Wines from this grape have a ruby-red color, a fruity character, and high acidity, and are most often used in blends.
