The variety has a natural origin resulting from the crossing of Gouais blanc and Blaue Zimmettraube. It is known globally by many synonyms, including Blaufränkisch, Kékfrankos, Frankovka, and Modra frankinja.

The vines are characterized by vigorous growth and have large five-lobed leaves. The bunches are medium-sized, weighing 145–220 g, and range from medium-dense to dense. The berries are round in shape, dark blue in color, and possess a thick, durable skin.

The plant is adapted to the climate of Central Europe and possesses good cold resistance, though it can be sensitive to conditions during flowering. The variety is exclusively for wine production and is used to produce wines with a pronounced structure and high levels of tannins and acidity.
