The variety is of natural origin, having arisen from a cross between the Castellana Blanca variety and an unknown parent. The berries are blue-black with abundant bloom and are large. The variety requires a warm climate and a high sum of active temperatures to ripen.

The plant possesses high resistance to drought and heat, while being characterized by low resistance to fungal diseases, especially downy mildew and powdery mildew. The variety is distinguished by high yield, which requires control to obtain high-quality raw material.

Wines from this variety possess good aging potential, pronounced tannins, and aromas of black fruits, spices, tobacco, and leather. It is most often used in blends, particularly in Rioja along with Tempranillo.
