The variety is an ancient autochthon of the Aosta Valley region, known since the end of the 18th century. It is genetically related to local varieties Petit Rouge, Vien de Nus, Prié, and Vuillermin. It is mainly used for the production of red wines, both in blends and as a single-varietal wine.
The plant has high growth vigor and is adapted to high-altitude conditions up to 800 meters. The ripening period is early or early-mid. It has high winter hardiness, but is sensitive to grey mold due to the compactness of the bunches and the thin skin of the berries.
The leaves are wedge-shaped, predominantly five-lobed. The bunches are medium or small in size, cylindrical, and often winged. The berries are black, round, small in size, and covered with a waxy bloom.
