The leaf is medium, rounded, five-lobed, very deeply incised. Clusters are medium, conical, dense or very dense. Berries are small, rounded, dark blue in color, covered with a thick waxy bloom, with a thick skin.
Vines are traditionally grown on their own roots in a basket shape for protection against winds. The variety is characterized by relative resistance to diseases but is sensitive to drought.
Wines from this variety are distinguished by high color intensity, pronounced tannins, moderate or high acidity, and notes of dark berries, spices, coffee, chocolate, and tobacco.
