The variety is a local Greek grape whose name translates as 'black Athiri'. Due to its rarity and lack of study, biological characteristics of the plant, including morphology and disease resistance, are almost absent in publications.

It is used exclusively as a wine grape variety, rarely encountered in pure form. Typically, the variety is included in blends with other local Santorini grape varieties, such as Assyrtiko, Mandilaria, Aidani, and Mavrotragano.

Wines based on this grape possess a complex aroma and rich taste; sometimes the variety is used in the production of traditional sweet wines from sun-dried grapes. Traditionally, the variety is grown in the 'kouloura' form, which protects the clusters from strong winds and the sun.
