Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety is considered to be native to Spain and has an ancient history of origin. The name "Mataro" comes from the Catalan settlement of the same name. The variety belongs to the late-ripening group and is characterized by vigorous bushes.

Berries are medium-sized with thick skin. The variety has poor tolerance to low winter temperatures and is susceptible to downy mildew and powdery mildew. It possesses high drought tolerance, however, to achieve yields from 120 to 200 c/ha, it requires sufficient soil moisture.

It is used in winemaking for the production of red, rosé, and fortified wines, often acting as a component of blends. The wines are full-bodied, with a high level of alcohol and tannins, often possessing characteristic earthy or animal notes.
