The variety is ancient and of Portuguese origin. The berries have a dark skin color. Due to the presence of a functionally female flower type, cross-pollination by other grape varieties located nearby is required to obtain a harvest.
The variety has moderate vigor. Wines made from it are characterized by delicacy, moderate tannin content, freshness, and floral aromas with notes of currant and caramel. Upon ripening, an alcohol level of up to 12.5% vol. is possible with an acidity of about 6 g/l.
Genetically, the variety is one of the parents of the Touriga Franca grape variety. It is known under a multitude of synonyms, such as Mourisco Tinto and Mourisco Roxo. At the current time, the variety is considered rare and is under threat of extinction.
