The variety forms small, compact bunches with small berries covered in a thick bloom. It is characterized by late bud break and an early ripening period. The plant is sensitive to grey mold and downy mildew, therefore well-ventilated sites with stony soils are preferred for planting.
Wines made from this variety possess an intense purple-red color and tannins. The aroma profile is dominated by vegetal notes, such as green pepper and paprika, complemented by balsamic shades. The variety is used both for creating varietal wines and in blends to increase the complexity and structure of the beverage.
