The variety is of ancient Greek origin and has historically been cultivated in the Achaia region and on the island of Kefalonia. The plant possesses bisexual flowers and medium-sized, rounded, five-lobed, deeply dissected leaves. The clusters are medium-sized and conical, most often dense.
The berries are medium-sized, rounded, black in color with a thick waxy bloom and thin skin. The variety has an early ripening period and is distinguished by above-average yields; however, it is sensitive to drought, heat, shedding of ovaries, and downy mildew infection.
A wine variety intended for the production of fortified wines, and less frequently, dry red wines. The wines are distinguished by their deep color and rich aromatics with notes of dried fruits, chocolate, caramel, and spices, and also possess high aging potential.
