The group represents a heterogeneous complex of ancient autochthonous varieties distributed in Thrace, Central Greece, the Peloponnese, and Crete. Genetic studies confirm high heterogeneity of the group, which includes both closely related clones and significantly different varieties.

The plants are used in winemaking to produce wines with deep color and high tannin content. The group is characterized by small berries with intense skin color, low yield, slow ripening, and susceptibility to rot. The wine profile is dominated by notes of black and red berries, with shades of spice, cocoa, coffee, and tobacco developing during aging.
