The Mornen noir variety, also known as Chasselas Noir, is an indigenous variety of the Rhône-Alpes region. According to genetic studies, it originates from Mondeuse noire. The vines are characterized by high vigor and an upright shoot growth habit. Leaves are small to medium in size, with a round, entire shape.
The bunches are medium-sized with round or slightly oval berries of a dark purple, almost black color. The variety ripens approximately two weeks after Chasselas. It is susceptible to grey mold (Botrytis cinerea), adapts well to granitic sandy soils, and allows for short pruning.
The variety is intended for winemaking. The red wines produced from it are characterized by a deep color, low acidity, and low tannin content. The variety should not be confused with the Hungarian variety Menoir or the Brazilian seedless form BRS Morena.
