Ciliegiolo is a wine grape variety widely distributed in central Italy, especially in Tuscany, Umbria, and Apulia. Genetically, the variety is related to the Sangiovese variety and has been known in Tuscany since the end of the 16th century. It is used primarily for the production of red wines, as well as rosé and passito, often as part of blends to which it imparts full-bodiedness and notes of cherry or plum.
The maturity group of the variety is medium-late or late. The plant has a perfect flower and round, slightly or moderately lobed leaves with pubescence on the underside. The clusters are of medium size, cylindrical or cylindro-conical in shape, and medium-dense or dense. The berries are of medium size, oval, dark purple in color, and covered with a thick waxy bloom.
The variety is characterized by high and stable yields, but it is not resistant to frost and fungal diseases. In regional studies, Morettone is identified as a local name or a clone of Ciliegiolo.
