Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety is ancient and was long considered nearly extinct. The vine is characterized by a long vegetative cycle, and the berries have a distinctive lead-blue hue. In the 20th century, the variety was considered difficult to cultivate, which led to its mass eradication from vineyards.

Wines made from Morenillo possess a good balance of alcohol and acidity, soft tannins, and intense aromas of red fruits with balsamic and spicy notes. Previously, the variety was used in blends, but currently, single-varietal wines are also produced.

Morenillo should be distinguished from the Morena variety, which is a seedless table variety, and from the Morellino variety, which is a synonym for Sangiovese.
