Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety originates from the La Hoya area (Castilla-La Mancha region, Spain). It is a local autochthonous variety and is genetically distinct from the Morenillo grape common in Valencia. In recent years, the variety has become the subject of restoration and conservation programs for ancient genetic diversity, as it was at risk of extinction.

It is classified as a wine grape variety with black-colored berries. Analysis using SSR markers has confirmed its unique genetic profile; there have been suggestions of possible relation to the Crujidera variety (a synonym for Marufo). Research is aimed at studying the potential of the variety for adaptation to climate change conditions.
