In ampelographic sources, the name Morellone is primarily used as a synonym for the wine grape variety Montepulciano, and sometimes for the Primitivo and Zinfandel varieties. In Tuscany, a separate local genetic resource known as Il Morellone has also been recorded, which differs from other traditional varieties of the region.

As a synonym for Montepulciano, this grape belongs to late-ripening varieties with perfect flowers and medium-vigor vines. The clusters are of medium size. The grape is thermophilic and is used for wine production to create red wines with good extract and moderate acidity.
