The variety originates from the Castile-La Mancha region. It is often identified with the Portuguese variety Mourisco Tinto, also known as Marufo. Historically, the name was introduced to distinguish it from the Moravia Agria variety.

Wines produced from this grape have medium body and above-average acidity. The bouquet is dominated by notes of red plum, cherry, and spices, with occasional floral nuances and a velvety texture.

The variety is included in the register of commercial grape varieties in Spain, with a planting area of over 1000 hectares. It is also used as a parent component in breeding, in particular in the development of the Moribel variety.
