The variety is autochthonous to the Catalonia region, where it has been grown since the 14th century. Its main purpose is the production of high-quality wines; in particular, it is part of the classic blend for Cava sparkling wine, along with the Macabeo and Xarel-lo varieties. In smaller volumes, it is used to create still white wines.

The plant belongs to very late-ripening varieties with early bud break, which makes it sensitive to spring frosts. The best performance in terms of productivity and quality is achieved when grown at high altitudes up to 800 meters above sea level.

Morphologically, the variety is characterized by a medium, slightly lobed leaf and large bunches with medium-sized berries. The variety is susceptible to powdery mildew, but shows resistance to botrytis bunch rot and low sensitivity to downy mildew. The wines are distinguished by aromas of green apple, lime, and white flowers.
