The variety is of French origin, with the Pyrenees and the Bordeaux region considered its historical homeland. It is genetically related to the Duras and Tressot varieties. It belongs to late-ripening varieties, which is why it requires warm and sunny conditions to achieve the necessary phenolic maturity.
The plant's leaf is medium-sized, three- or five-lobed, with dense cobwebby pubescence on the underside. Bunches are small or medium, loose. Berries are small, round, black, and possess thick skin and a waxy bloom. The variety is susceptible to spring frosts due to early bud break.
Wines from this variety are characterized by an intense violet-black color, high tannin content, and a powerful aroma with notes of violet, blackberry, blueberry, plum, spices, and licorice. It is mainly used in blends, however, in hot climates, it is suitable for the production of varietal wines.
