Piros Bakator, which translates from Hungarian as "Red Bakator", is an ancient variety with red berries. The variety is heterozygous for the Gret1 retroelement, which ensures normal anthocyanin synthesis in the skin.

The variety is used exclusively in winemaking for the production of light red wines with aromas of red fruits, spicy and earthy notes. Samples of the variety are maintained in genetic collections, in particular at the Institute of Viticulture and Enology at the University of Pécs.
