Variety description

10 August 2026

Sagrantino is an autochthonous variety of the Umbria region. It is a wine grape variety that was historically used for the production of sweet wines for religious purposes, and since the 1970s, it has become the basis for the creation of dry red wines with a high tannin content.

The plant has medium vine vigor. Leaves are medium-sized, five-lobed, with pubescence on the underside. Bunches are medium or small; berries are round, black in color, with thick skin. The variety requires a long, hot season for ripening and is characterized by low yield.

The variety is distinguished by relative resistance to diseases and pests. Biochemically, it is known for an extremely high content of polyphenols and tannins, which provides its wines with deep color, powerful structure, and significant potential for long-term aging.
