The variety originates from the Bordeaux region in France. It was widespread in the 19th century, but after the phylloxera infestation, its acreage decreased sharply. Currently, the variety is considered rare and is found in small vineyards in France, as well as in California and Australia.
A wine grape variety of mid-season maturity. Young shoots are heavily pubescent, mature leaves have three to seven lobes with a U-shaped petiolar sinus. Clusters are medium-sized, dense, conical in shape, sometimes with wings. Berries are medium-sized, round, black with a waxy bloom.
Wines from this variety are characterized by intense color, high acidity, and pronounced tannins with aromas of black berries, spices, and herbaceous notes. The variety is characterized by sensitivity to powdery mildew. It is important to distinguish the variety from the wine-growing zone of the same name, where primarily white wines are produced.
