The variety is a wine grape used for the production of red wines. Historically, the grape gained fame for its ability to produce wines with a very intense color, which is reflected in its French name Corbeau, meaning "raven."
The variety is characterized as late-maturing. Genetic studies have confirmed the identity of the Portuguese variety Sevilhão T with such varieties as Corbeau, Douce Noire, Bonarda, and Charbono. The variety is ancient, of folk selection, and has a large number of synonyms.
