The Šipol variety is not an independent breeding unit, but acts as one of the common names for the Ranfol variety, also known under the names Štajerska belina or Gouais blanc. This variety belongs to the technical (wine) grape varieties.
The origin of the variety is associated with the northwestern part of Croatia and Slovenian Styria. Genetic studies confirm that Ranfol is a descendant of the Belina starohrvatska variety, known in Europe as Weisser Heunisch or Gouais blanc.
